DEEP BLUE GREEN Activities in Greece

Sport, Nature and Well-Being in Action

As part of the DEEP BLUE GREEN – Exercise for Well-Being project, Greece successfully delivered a dynamic and inclusive programme of activities during the European Week of Sport 2025, coordinated by ANEMOS Sports Club in Chania, Crete. These actions showcased how physical activity, nature connection, mental well-being, and social inclusion can come together to create meaningful experiences for communities of all ages and abilities

The Greek implementation focused on creating accessible, engaging, and community-based experiences that encouraged participants to move, connect, learn, and enjoy the healing power of blue and green environments.

Opening the Week with Community and Ecopsychology

The Greek activities began with a vibrant opening event at the Municipal Park of Agioi Apostoloi in Chania, bringing together senior citizens, people with disabilities, families, and local residents in a celebration of health and inclusion.

The opening programme included:

  • An Ecopsychology Seminar, introducing participants to the connection between nature and mental health
  • A nature walking session promoting mindful movement
  • Traditional Greek dancing for joyful intergenerational participation
  • Wellness exercises focused on flexibility, breathing, and relaxation
  • Fun inclusive games encouraging teamwork and social interaction

The event also featured a live online connection with partner countries participating simultaneously across Europe, reinforcing the European spirit of collaboration and shared action.

Blue exercise actions included:

  • Aqua Aerobic at Chryssi Akti Beach
  • Swimming for All with multiple distance options
  • Cross Aquathlon
  • Canoe and Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP) experiences

These activities encouraged participants to engage with the sea not only as a sporting environment, but also as a source of emotional restoration, relaxation, and connection with nature.

Nature, Creativity and Community Experiences

The Greek programme also highlighted how movement, culture, creativity, and environmental awareness can work together.

Additional activities included:

  • Handicraft workshop for bird nest-making, promoting ecological awareness
  • Traditional dance workshops
  • Beach volleyball tournament
  • Fun games for families and mixed-age groups
  • Community salad competition, celebrating healthy nutrition and local food culture

These actions fostered creativity, social cohesion, environmental appreciation, and active participation in community life.

A Holistic Model for Well-Being

The Greek implementation of DEEP BLUE GREEN demonstrated a holistic and innovative model where:

  • physical activity supports health
  • nature enhances emotional well-being
  • inclusion ensures equal access
  • culture strengthens social connection
  • education promotes healthier lifestyles

By combining blue exercise, green exercise, ecopsychology, inclusive sport, and community engagement, Greece created a powerful example of how local action can contribute to healthier and more connected societies.

The DEEP BLUE GREEN activities in Greece reflect the project’s vision of making movement meaningful, accessible, and deeply connected to people and nature.
